The X-ray sky is dynamic and rich in high-energy transients and variability, some of which remain mysterious in nature while more await discovery. Dedicated to time-domain astrophysics, the Einstein Probe (EP) is a space X-ray observatory designed to perform sensitive monitoring of the sky in the poorly explored soft X-ray band at high cadence and to characterise interesting sources discovered. It is expected to detect X-ray transients of various kinds in large numbers, including new classes, and to monitor the variability of known sources. To achieve this goal, it carries an imaging Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) with a 3600 square-degree FoV, which makes use of novel micro-pore optics for X-ray focusing, and enables detection of fainter X-ray transients than those detectable with the conventional non-focusing sky monitors. It also carries a Follow-up X-ray Telescope (FXT) for deep observations in 0.3-10keV to characterise and precisely locate newly discovered transients. Transient alerts will be issued quickly to trigger follow-up observations at multi-wavelengths. The main science goals of EP are concerned with violent processes and extreme physical conditions involving black holes, compact objects and catastrophic celestial events. Einstein Probe is a mission led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in collaboration with ESA (as mission-of-opportunity) and MPE, Germany. This presentation will introduce the mission concept and current development, and its science capability and prospects.

About YUAN Weimin

Dr. Weimin Yuan is the chief scientist of the High-energy Astrophysics Group at Space Science Division, National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC), CAS. His research interests involve X-ray astronomy, mainly in the observational and experimental study of active galactic nuclei and high-energy transients. He pursued his doctoral research at Max-Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) and obtained a Ph.D. in physics from the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany. Afterward, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Tsukuba Space Center of JAXA, Japan, for the development of the MAXI mission, and later at the University of Cambridge, UK, on X-ray astronomy. He joined CAS in 2004, first at NAOC/Yunnan Observatory, and then at NAOC headquarter. He is the Principal Investigator of the CAS’s Einstein Probe mission.
