On 10 November 2021, Prof. ZHANG Peng gave an online seminar on FengYun Satellite Program. The lecture was organized in the context of the ISSI-BJ "On Things to Come" series that addresses ongoing as well as future space missions by inviting renowned scientists from different countries, institutes, and space agencies.

About the webinar

China began to develop its meteorological satellite program since 1969 and named as Fengyun series (FY). Since the first satellite (FY-1A) was successfully launched in 1988, four series have been developed, and nineteen satellites have been launched. At present, eight satellites operate in orbit, including three FY-2 satellites, three FY-3 satellites, and two FY-4 satellites. The second-generation polar orbital mission (LEO) FY-3 and second-generation geostationary orbital mission (GEO) FY-4A series have output stable data with remarkable quality.

With the associated open data policy, as well as the accurate measurements, the FY satellites has become a main pillar used to construct Earth’s operational observation system together with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellites in the U.S.A. and European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) satellites in Europe.

The FY satellite data has been applied not only in the meteorological but also in agriculture, hydraulic engineering, environmental, education, scientific research and other fields. Two meteorological satellites have been launched this year. They are FY-4B on 3 June and FY-3E on 5 July.

In this presentation, six aspects of FY satellites will be addressed including FY program overview, current missions and data services, latest launch and new capability, future program, typical applications, international cooperation.

About Prof. ZHANG Peng

Peng Zhang, Ph.D, Senior Scientist. Deputy Director–General of National Satellite Meteorological Center (NSMC/CMA) since 2013, Chief Director of FY-3 ground segment since 2013, Chair of Global Space Inter-Calibration System (GSICS) Executive Panel from 2014 to 2017, Chief Director of Chinese TanSat satellite ground segment since 2015, IEEE Senior Member since 2016.

Prof. Zhang got his Master degree at AIOFM/CAS (Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences) for atmospheric optics in 1995 and his Ph.D at IAP/CAS (Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences) for atmospheric physics in 1998.

Dr. Zhang intensively involved in conceiving, developing, and operating FY-3 satellite ground segment.

With his leadership, Chinese meteorological polar orbiting satellite FY-3 data have been used worldwide and the radiance calibration accuracy of the instruments has been improved progressively.

His research experience covers the atmospheric remote sensing, satellite calibration and validation, and atmospheric radiative transfer calculation, etc.

He has authored and coauthored over 100 papers published in refereed scientific journals to date, in addition to editing 2 Books and many book chapters and technical reports.
